Darmon Meader- saxophonist/vocalist

Join the SSJO for an unforgettable night of vocal jazz with special guest artist Darmon Meader. Recognized in both the instrumental and vocal jazz worlds, Meader is a highly respected vocalist, arranger and saxophonist who has achieved international recognition as the founder and musical director of the New York Voices. As a member of New York Voices, he has released numerous recordings and has collaborated with a variety of artists including Ray Brown, George Benson, Nancy Wilson, Jim Hall, Paquito D’Rivera and the Count Basie Orchestra. The concert program will exclusively feature his original arrangements in both combo and full ensemble format. If you are a lover of vocal jazz, this is a performance you certainly do not want to miss.

The Pleasure of Your Company

Having appeared multiple times as a soloist at the Wildish Theater, The Jazz Station and the Hult Center, a graduate of the University of Georgia, Calvin Orlando Smith went on to be the first African-American accepted into Cambridge University's prestigious Department of History of Art and Architecture and receive a degree. As a performer, he has performed in three Broadway productions and appeared in seven national, international and or limited tours. Mr. Smith has worked regionally for 40 years as a member of the Actor's Equity Association and shared the stage with Morgan Fairchild, Cathy Rigby, Florence Henderson, Ben Vereen, JK Simmons, Isaac Hayes, the New Kids on the block and most recently, Garth Brooks. In June 2022, he made his Carnegie Hall debut in Brahms "Requiem".

Billie Holiday & Carmen McRae: A Beautiful Friendship

Captivating vocalist Clairdee pays homage to two great innovators in the performance of American popular song: Carmen McRae and her friend and mentor, Billie Holiday. The enduring legacy of these quintessential jazz singers, their friendship from the time pianist McRae was just seventeen years old, and their individual musical gifts for storytelling provides a unique celebration of both singers.

 

Songs include: What A Little Moonlight Can Do, Don't Explain, Beautiful Friendship, Nice Work If You Can Get It, and more.

 

Locals Only Concert
